No seriously. Stop and check yourself, what is the position of your head? Are u looking at a computer screen that is off to one side, not directly in front? Are you trying to read this while talking on the phone with your head bent to one side? Did u just finish feeding your baby and were looking down for awhile?
Repetitive and sustained positioning of your head and shoulders can lead to problems down the road such as headaches, stiff necks, and sore shoulders.
This Body tip, is actually a Body check. If there is one activity you perform every day for a long period of time check your head positioning. If your head is not central, directly over your shoulders, perform the reverse of that motion for a counter stretch and then position yourself in center. For example, let’s say you always talk on the phone so your right ear is almost on your right shoulder. Ouch. First, stretch your left ear to your left shoulder slowly. Then get a headset!
If your computer monitor is is slightly to the left, so you are always turning your head to the left. Turn your head to the right, and hold. Then move your computer. You will thank me down the road.
Check yourself periodically throughout the day. If you are driving and your shoulders are by your ears. First relax, you will get to your destination, then let your shoulders drop. Over time you will have to check yourself less and less, and being in an awkward position will begin to feel well, awkward and unnatural.
Ok, my friends keep an eye out. Soon I will post a tasty end of the summer dinner……
