Think Like Zuck

These days you bring up the word “Facebook” and all kinds of emotions and opinions start being thrown about. Some people believe Facebook should not monopolize social media just to make a profit.

think like zuckAs you know, I like to read so when I was given the opportunity to review Ekaterina Walter’s book on the man and business behind the Social Media Empire I was a bit curious. How does one go from a smart college kid to a household name? I was also interested to know if the rumors are true, was Facebook created just to make a profit? If so, then why would we want to “Think Like Zuck”?  Or, was Facebook developed from passions and the intentions of a goal driven man to help society?

Even with all the negative comments about Facebook, Walter does an excellent job of providing the thought process of Mark Zuckerberg from an objective standpoint, with sprinklings of motivation throughout the book. She begins on a positive note from the first page, set out to prove that Mark did indeed create Facebook to help others, and even provides a heart lifting example. Throughout the book Walter continues to highlight Mark’s achievements, and notes his personality traits and big vision about providing a service to foster deep relationships for society by connecting people.

As you read further into the book, it is obvious to the reader that Walter has invested a large amount of time in researching not only Mark and Facebook, but other successful companies. I couldn’t help but be inspired from reading about all the successful entrepreneurs following their passions and intuition. Even a reader who continues to disbelieve in Mark’s intentions can find useful information in the book. For example, the reader can learn more about the 5 business secrets, or become inspired from the insightful quotes, or realize if you have a dream and strong belief you can create anything.

If you are looking for a little motivation, direction, or are interested in starting your own business open your mind with Walter’s book and Think like Zuck. You can find it at Amazon.com

When to Push and When to Let Go

There are days, distances, asanas, stretches, workouts that you need to push though your mental barriers. And, there are days when you need to respect your limits and let go. Sometimes all this goes without saying, but sometimes we need friendly nudges.

When to push:
1. Uncomfortable stretch.
2. Muscle burn.
3. Muscle shaking.
4. Just tired and unmotivated.
5. Nervous about trying a new sport. Just go slow.

When to let go:
1. Pain. Done deal.
2. Extreme fatigue or soreness for many days in a row.
3. Any unease at a new skill, especially if you are skipping progression.
4. End of a workout or practice and you are mentally and physically exhausted. Take it from me. Leave it, come back another day.
5. Shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness.

Listen to your body, let it tell you what you are capable at any moment.  By doing so you lower your risk of injury, and increase your ability to progress quicker in the long run.

What Motivates You?

When you commit to a active healthier lifestyle it’s not always “Go hard, or Go home”. This is just not sustainable for the long haul.

Some days, or weeks a slower active pace is required. During this time, your body heals, recovers and adapts to the higher load you pushed it through. These days/weeks are just as important as the “Go hard, Go home”  more intense days.

Same is true with diet. There are the lean, green days, and fuller carbohydrate ones.

But, how do you stay motivated through the peaks and valleys? Through the months and years? Through injuries and healing? Or, just start?

For me, one huge motivator is being outdoors.

I must admit, I’ve gone through my share of flat lines, peaks and valleys. Times of training hard to sitting and studying hard. Last year our wedding motivated me through the days I wanted to hide out on the couch with a book and a sweet snack.

This year has been more of a struggle to find the right balance of being active and recovering. With nothing big to prepare for and a very busy job, I was always swinging too far from one end of the spectrum to the other with no sense of direction.

With my new schedule shift, and becoming part of the Fitfluential Team my motivation and goals are reawakening. Check out the Fitfluential website when you have time. There are a bunch of inspiring stories, blogs and real life people striving to find the right balance of healthy activity and lifestyle to maintain throughout their whole lives. Being part of this team has also inspired me to create a Fitness Bucket List on Pinterest. Which has re-sparked my long run desires (which took a break due to long days on my feet). Maybe I’ll even train for my 1st half marathon?  I’m not sure yet. All I know is I have a great place to go for motivation, new workouts, or even stories for a rest day. I’m very excited for whatever lies ahead, and for those who continue to join me ;) .

Prioritize

Being comfortable in my own skin doesn’t come naturally to me. My path to where I am now (continuously evolving) has been through twists and turns, peaks and valleys, sun and snow. You get the picture.

But, it’s the reason why I entered the Health Industry in my teens. And, it’s the reason I’m still here now.

So yes, I’ve been through some unhealthy times where I didn’t work out, ate too much and gained weight.  I can tell you, these were not my happiest of mental places, or my best years. I could choose to blame it on some injuries. Or to scapegoat my lack of time, or situations outside my control.

The truth is and will always be, it is my decision. My decision on how to act or react from moment to moment, my choice. At that time I didn’t know, or understand this. I think I’m finally starting to. Thanks to my husband, family and friends for the support through the years.

I believe it’s all part of my purpose. Part of my reason for being here. To go through challenging times and make it out on the other side to share with you. Help one another, that’s what life is about right? Sharing experiences. I’m starting to feel more comfortable with that.

Anyways, take home lesson of all that.

Health is a choice. It’s what you choose to prioritize everyday to help you get where you want to go.

Even if you are injured, and can’t workout the way you want to. You can still focus on helping your body to heal.

Currently, I have not been making health a priority as much as I usually do. It’s been super busy, which is good. However, my workouts have been a little less intense, a diet a little less clean, overall a little less balance. It’s time for a little Health Spring Cleaning.

This week choose to prioritize the people, places and things that will help you to be your healthiest, physically and mentally. It’s not always the easiest, but it is definitely the most rewarding.

K, going to step off the soap box now. Thanks for listening. If you need help cleaning up your diet, check out my new affiliate Sunfood.
